Ole Smoker Rides Again

Who was Ole Smoker? Labrador has a rich tradition of legends and storytelling, the most well-known dog team legend is that of Ole Smoker the ghost trapper of Labrador. Some say an old trapper by the name of Smoker got lost in a snowstorm years ago while driving his dog team and perished along with his dogs. After his death, Smoker's ghost was often seen driving his team of pure white huskies and himself dressed completely in white furs; appearing just in time to warn other travellers of a storm was coming or to guide them home through blinding blizzards. Stories have circulated for years up and down Labrador's coastline. Some have heard the team passing by, while others have listened to the sounds of dogs' traces slapping against the side of their cabins and tents. Others claimed to have seen the team of white dogs driven by a man dressed in white furs. But no one has ever seen the tracks. Even today, the howls of Labrador winds are still sometimes drowned by another sound; the sound of a dog team running through the night. Maybe, just maybe, Ole Smoker is still out there.

In this tour you can expect to travel 30 kilometers (inclusive of return distance)by dog team across Lake Melville to your destination of Rabbit Island (just 15 kilometres from the base of the Mealy Mountains). Spend your day travelling with your dog team, as well as trying your hand at snowshoeing and ice fishing. At night you will enjoy the comforts of a Labrador cabin, settling in to the warmth of a wood stove, traditional Labrador meals and if desired, a challenging game of cards. This overnight tour offers absolute northern hospitality, while providing a glimpse into the lifestyle and traditions of the Labrador trapper. Maybe....just maybe you'll catch a glimpse of Ole Smoker himself!!

Contact us for further information and pricing. There is very limited space for the Ole Smoker Overnight Tour.
